HOW YOUR COMPANY CAN GET INVOLVED IN PATVORA PROGRAMMESback to top

PATVORA's desire is to cultivate dynamic and innovative collaboration with corporations that share our vision of safer roads. Through a variety of unique and mutually beneficial programmes, corporate organisations can support our work financially as well as with donations of time, technical skills and other resources.

We are committed to working closely with companies - not just as beneficiaries of charitable and community contributions but as true partners in the fight against road safety crisis. As companies around the world feel the ever more observant eyes of consumers upon their businesses, we expect corporate Africa to recognise the need to adopt ever more socially responsible business practices.

At PATVORA, we appreciate the value of working directly with companies where we believe that a partnership approach, producing mutual benefits, will have a better outcome for the communities we serve. Increasingly, we believe that companies should recognise the value that such partnerships hold for themselves.

Why Corporate Support is Important

Working with corporations, the PATVORA organisation intends to make a tremendous impact in the areas of research, information and advocacy in road safety development. Together, we intend to make great strides in improving road safety for road users.

Our corporate sponsors can come from diverse industries, provided they share our vision of making an everyday difference in the lives of road users. While the statistics of road accident victims continue to grow, they don't tell the whole story. The emotional impact of road crash on families, children, employees, friends and consumers is why companies should respond to this important issue.

Collaboration with PATVORA is a unique opportunity to not only build goodwill for your company, but to help build your business as well. Each Corporate relationship is a unique opportunity helping PATVORA reach people, recruit volunteers and raise money.

PATVORA is proud of Corporate Nigeria's support for other killer diseases and we count on their support.

Become a Corporate Friend

Direct Involvement in Road Safety back to top

In Nigeria there are many ways in which the private sector can directly sponsor road safety initiatives. Four main areas of sponsorship are

•  Road safety education and knowledge transfer;

•  Publicity and awareness campaigns;

•  Enforcement;

•  Driver training.

These four groups are classified as the main areas of business involvement in road safety sponsorship; however the list of areas of sponsorship is inexhaustive because companies can participate in the sponsoring of road signs or reflective markings to enhance the visibility of vulnerable road users and heavy goods vehicles through their advertising avenues. In addition, companies can sponsor hard engineering measures but this aspect of corporate sponsorship requires extensive analysis and cannot be included here.

Road Safety Education/Knowledge Transfer

In road safety education, companies can become contributors to child road safety education through a number of ways. These initiatives include the provision of resource materials that teach children about road safety or direct investment in road safety education. For instance, companies can develop teaching resource packs that will enhance primary school road safety education. Indeed, road safety teams of companies can tour schools teaching road safety. Alternatively, companies may fund road safety education for primary school children by developing Youth Centres for fixed site traffic schools and providing necessary equipment.

Contribution to road safety education by companies can be done through the sponsoring of road safety workshops which could led to the production of policy documents to help guide schools and safety agencies.

On road safety knowledge transfer, the corporate sector can fund road safety improvement studies and research activities in the universities. These can be done through funding postgraduate thesis and contributing to the setting up of a road accident research centre in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Commission. Specifically, big organisations can fund the building of Road Safety Academies to conduct safe and defensive driving courses for their company's staff and contractors.

Road Safety Publicity

Road safety publicity and awareness campaigns can be carried out for specific target groups using various forms of media. These initiatives may address drunk/driving, child safety, traffic speeds, first help measures and seat belt wearing. Opportunities exist for the private sector to assist these publicity campaigns in a number of ways, either by helping to fund the main publicity through television, radio, newspapers, magazines and posters, or by providing the target group with opportunities.

Specifically major campaigns which are usually initiated by the Federal Road Safety Commission, such as the ‘don't drink and drive' and speed campaigns during the holiday periods can be financed by private companies. These campaigns may be backed up by breweries, alcohol distributors, car manufacturers, car distributors, organisations with large fleet of vehicles, insurance companies and banks. These companies may produce publicity materials and fund NGOs to conduct campaigns to tackle social problems associated with alcohol misuse, over speeding and aggressive driving.

Also, alcohol manufacturers can partner with NGOs to support driver education initiatives and road safety improvements seeking to reduce the number of alcohol related driving accidents. Campaigns may include the raising of awareness of drink related accidents through advertising.

Enforcement

Direct sponsorship of the Federal Road Safety Commission can be done through donation of equipment i.e. patrol and tow vans, breathalysers and other road safety monitoring facilities. However, it is recommended that interested companies contact the FRSC for discussion on their specific areas of need. Also, companies can partner with FRSC through sponsoring of campaigns for specific intervention or funding of partnership programmes

Driver Training and Awareness

Driver training is typically a private sector activity, with driving schools or individual instructors operating as businesses. However, additional private sector involvement with driver training is possible in a number of other ways, for instance through sponsoring driving competitions, with an emphasis on road safety and setting up of driver education schools by car manufacturers.

Also, road safety competitions for school children and traffic officers can be funded by companies and driving safety promotions for specific categories of drivers can be organised and sponsored by car manufacturers to create a better driving environment. Establishment of driver education centres can also be done by private companies in collaboration with NGOs and the FRSC.

Safer driving for truck drivers can be assisted through driver training and the use of information systems. These can be developed and sponsored by a number of partners such as private companies (vehicle manufacturers, insurance and petroleum companies), non-governmental organisations (road haulers' associations, Insurance Unions) and research institutes. Such safety programmes should include defensive driver training and highlighting awareness of driver fatigue in accidents.

For motorcycle riders, training can be sponsored in various locations by motor cycle component sellers in partnership with road transport union. Private companies may partner with NGOs to teach motorcycle riders first aid administration.

However, it is important to state that to ensure success and effectiveness, these initiatives should involve partnership between the private sector, NGOs interested in road safety, National road unions and the FRSC. In situations where the private sector provides equipment, the FRSC should take possession and fund operation costs.
