CELEBRITIES FOR ROAD
SAFETY
When celebrities speak,
people generally listen and the corporate citizens respond
positively. Nigerian celebrities have spoken on other killer
diseases like cancer, HIV, heart disease, malaria and the
need for more action. As they appeared on news reports and
became the focus of heavy press coverage, the Nigerian
public received swift lessons on the debilitating effects of
such diseases. People heard the messages because they are
beloved and popular actors and their "celebrity" commands
attention. That's a good thing, but road safety crisis is no
less debilitating.
Road safety is not talked
about enough. Other diseases have had famous people champion
their cause. As a matter of fact, no celebrity has
heightened the awareness of road safety. If there is no
celebrity drawing attention to the facts of road accidents
and the need for more action how will the message be spread?
By any reasonable measure,
celebrities have failed to respond to this country’s
greatest neglected public health crisis – road safety.
With the huge road casualty figure in Nigeria, it is obvious
that road safety awareness and education is a necessary
commodity.
A responsibility lies with
every person who is a road user. The celebrity who travels
on Nigerian roads know the realities of this painful and
limiting disease. If that person is you, but you have not
become active in road safety advocacy because you think that
one person cannot make a difference -- THINK AGAIN.
This
site aims to maximise the delivery of road safety activities
by using celebrities. The website encourages celebrities to
join in the fight against road safety crisis by
participating in innovative national campaigns aimed at
reducing the road toll. The awareness campaigns will include
a series of short television and radio advertisements
highlighting road safety messages.
This site will feature
comments of personalities who are considered to be role
models or icons in the entertainment industry, politics,
corporate sector and other persons holding prominent positions.
The
site recognises that many celebrities desperately need pet
programmes to execute but are too busy with their careers.
If you are an opinion leader or celebrity interested in
further information about how to participate to increase
road safety awareness and/or support fundraising and
legislation. Please call Binta on 080 37031321 to discuss
