Who We Are

PATVORA is a non profit, non-governmental service organisation dedicated to improving safety of road users in Nigeria. We are a movement of concerned Nigerians interested in building a network of road users committed to working for road casualty reduction.

PATVORA was set up in 2001; activities initially focused on primarily the huge neglected accident victims' group. However, over the years, the PATVORA organisation expanded its activities in recognition that with over 80% of road fatalities occurring in developing countries and countries in transition, road safety crisis has become a huge problem to the African continent.

PATVORA members have committed themselves to invest their time and resources in improving road safety throughout the African continent with Nigeria as a focal point. By promoting tri-sector partnerships for road safety development, increasing public awareness on road safety and advocating enhanced funding of National road safety agencies in the continent, members of PATVORA are aspiring to be a voice of authority, with access to research, information and expertise on relevant issues on road safety. The network supports and encourages the delivery of enforcement led road safety programmes.

Today, we have become a major road safety NGO in Nigeria with a network of thousands of people linked together on road safety issues. PATVORA is a source of support and information for individuals, advocacy groups, companies and institutions dedicated to the development of road safety in Nigeria and it is working in partnership with some local and international development agencies on fresh initiatives on road safety. Our networks enable individuals and organisations to connect with each other on road safety issues affecting us all, from prevention and pre-hospital care for road users to post-crash and rehabilitation of victims.

PATVORA is a World Health Organisation recognized committed partner in the fight against global road safety crisis and a partner to Road Traffic Injury Research Network (RTIRN).

How PATVORA is organised?

Guided by the aspirations of road users in Nigeria, PATVORA pursues its mission with both excellence and compassion. We draw our strength from our diversity, resources and experience. Some of PATVORA's work is carried out directly by PATVORA's staff and volunteers, whilst other work is done by a wide variety of individuals and organisations in partnership with PATVORA. For this reason and in order to keep administration costs as low as possible, PATVORA is able to have just one office and research secretariat, which is at Asaba, Delta State of Nigeria with fifteen staff. As part of PATVORA's expansion programme, in the first quarter of the year 2005, its Secretariat will be relocated to Abuja, the Federal Capital territory of Nigeria and six regional offices will be established.

Where does PATVORA's money come from?

PATVORA has two main sources of funding, public donations and the income from an anonymous individual donor that helped to start PATVORA.

What We Do back to top

The international community has set a goal of reversing the World Health Organisation's prediction that road crashes will be the third killer disease by 2020.  The international community cannot reach this goal alone; significant progress requires developing new ideas and partnerships with those most affected.  To achieve these objectives, PATVORA is mobilising road users in Nigeria to make the fight against road safety crisis a success. PATVORA's mission is to help prevent road crashes and save lives of road users.

To fulfill this mission, PATVORA offers support to road crash victims, funds research, provides information and relevant services to road users. The Organisation is also actively involved in educating and influencing communities to adopt road safety policies, practices and procedures that prevent and mitigate human suffering and economic losses arising from vehicular crashes.

PATVORA supports road safety training programmes in schools and encourages the work of the National road safety agency to improve policies and programmes in road safety and awareness creation.

PATVORA as an NGO, strives to be Nigeria's leading independent advocate for road safety development by engaging in advocacy for securing positive road safety policies with local, national and international decision-makers.

PATVORA collaborates with other road safety agencies to build productive business and relationships with road safety professionals, financiers and officials from around the world.

PATVORA promotes road safety interests of African countries at international events and supports the activities of major interest groups and organizations dedicated to consolidating and improving road safety infrastructure in Africa.

PATVORA collates and presents public opinion on road safety to the authorities and develops partnerships with the private sector and road transport unions to reduce road casualties.

We aim to improve the link between road safety research, policy development, programme design and project implementation in the African continent.

PATVORA is deeply committed to working with organisations, communities and individuals to overcome the crippling effects of road safety crisis, particularly in communities where many road users are potential accident victims and many have died.

PATVORA is promoting a major road safety continental initiative for youths- Continental Road Safety Initiative for Youths (CRISY)

What You Can Do back to top

Overcoming road safety crisis in Africa is not a job for just one person. It requires many of us working together. It will take a worldwide movement of diverse and committed individuals and groups — from national governments to community groups, from organizations like PATVORA to people like you.

At PATVORA, we believe that policy makers must create and implement policies that address the underlying causes of road crashes because, the rights of every road user must be respected so that people can use the roads safely. Thus, PATVORA is working with both policy makers and communities to improve road safety before road safety crisis escalates to an epidemic situation. We believe that this is the best way to enable road users have safer roads.

You can also make a huge difference in a variety of ways. By joining forces with PATVORA, you can help road users gain the skills and resources they need to build better road safety culture.

Together, we can help road users in the continent create lasting victories over road safety crisis. Together, we can make a difference. Take action today
